Against: I'm against the use of mining for oil because it hurts the earth.
In this sentence “against” is the preposition which modifies the noun “oil”. Where is the oil? It's in the earth.
Around: I loved having Jack's dog around at dinner time as he was always good company.
The word “around” is the preposition which modifies the compound noun, "dinner time".
As: As it was nearly midnight and I was tired, I decided to go to sleep.
In this sentence the “as” preposition modifies the noun, "midnight" and pronoun "I".
Before: Sometime before winter, flocks of geese fly south to find a warmer climate.
The word “before” is the preposition; it modifies the noun, "winter".
Behind: I was mad that I was behind my assignment because, busy with my sick baby, I didn't have time to do it.
The word “behind” is the preposition that modifies the noun "assignment".
Below: I was embarrassed because my shirt had a stain below the pocket.
In this sentence “below” is the preposition which modifies the noun "pocket" used to show location.
Beneath: In my childhood I sometimes played beneath an old bridge.
In this sentence “beneath” is the preposition which modifies the noun "bridge".
Beside: Beside the old dining table were at least twenty broken chairs.
The word “beside” is the preposition which modifies the compound noun "table".
Besides: I have no other family besides my mother.
In this sentence “besides” is the preposition which modifies the common noun "family" and the pronoun "I".
Between: I lost my watch between the parking lot and the movie theatre.
The word “between” is the preposition which modifies the noun "place".
Beyond: Beyond the Blue Mountains lies the eastern coast of Australia.
In this sentence “beyond” is the preposition which modifies a compound proper noun, "eastern coast".
By: In case of an emergency, start the flow of oxygen by gently pulling on the mask.
The word “by” is the preposition which modifies an adverb phrase, "gently pulling on the mask."
Concerning: Jane had horrible nightmares concerning the loss of her father.
In this sentence “concerning” is the preposition which modifies the compound noun, "the loss of her father".
Considering: Considering the summer heat, Larry decided to wear sunscreen.
The word “considering” is the preposition which modifies the compound noun 'summer heat".
Despite: In 2010, despite the oil spill, we spent our summer vacation in Florida.
In this sentence “despite” is the preposition which modifies the noun "spill".
Down: During the afternoon, we would go down to the pool to cool off before dinner.
In this sentence “down” is the preposition which modifies the noun "afternoon".
During: In the morning during breakfast my family liked to discuss their daily plans.
The word “during” is the preposition which modifies, the noun "breakfast".
