Grammar Tutorial
Most verbs have both an active and passive form. Remember that the subject of an active verb is the performer of the action. The subject of a passive verb has the action done to it. Sentences using the passive forms usually need more words to say the same thing.
Passive: The bread was baked by Helen
Active: Helen baked the bread.
Besides needing fewer words, active verbs make sentences more direct and forceful.
Passive: The speech had been given by the world-famous civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Active: The world-famous civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave the speech.
Passive: Soap operas are loved by people all over the world.
Active: People all over the world love soap operas.
However, the appropriate use of the passive voice still is a necessity. To understand the appropriate use of the passive voice, see the passive voice lesson.
